Landini REX4 Electra – Evolving Hybrid

Advantages of the innovative technology implementation project – from electric to hybrid

Working in vineyards and orchards requires the continuous implementation of technology to ensure that the efficiency of the tractor is increased – all the while focussing on how to improve comfort during the long hours spent driving your tractor.

With an eye to fulfilling these two goals, we incorporated the Electra – Evolving Hybrid system into the REX 4, which has long been known for its handling prowess and ease of use, topped with astoundingly thrifty running costs. Argo Tractors has developed both the mechanical part and the electrical components of this original project, looking to offer enhanced fuel saving, improved steering angle, greater stability and comfort.

This solution made it possible to create a compact hybrid tractor, where the 110 hp Diesel engine uses generator and battery to power the two front electric motors that drive the front axle. In addition to the other expected benefits, this solution stresses our focus on the environment and sustainability.

Advantages of Electra – Evolving Hybrid

The key innovations of the Electra–Evolving Hybrid system are its electric front wheel drive with independent wheels, electronically controlled cab suspension and semi-automatic transmission, which lend the Rex 4 even better handling, greater comfort and ease of use.

Undoubtedly, the most significant new feature is the fully electric front wheel drive with suspended axle, sporting two independent electric motors and associated sensors, electronic controls, generator and battery dedicated to energy recovery under braking and deceleration.

The entire system is controlled by the PMS (Power Management System), which supervises the operation of all devices, including the battery and controls motor and generator via their respective inverters.

  • The combination of technological improvements introduced by Electra – Evolving Hybrid will enable you to enjoy undisputed benefits:
  • enjoy 10% fuel saving on your tractor;
  • benefit from 15% better steering angle for improved manoeuvrability and easier operations;
  • experience greater stability during transport thanks to full integration with the current electric steering system;
  • choose the ratio between the front and rear wheels to suit your needs.
  • We also considered your comfort and introduced a new electronically controlled cab suspension featuring a semi-active system similar to that already available on high-end open-field tractors. Suspended on 4 points, the cab is equipped with two passive front suspension systems, while two anti-damping hydraulic shock absorbers governed by an electronic signal reduce vibration at the rear.
  • The control unit detects tractor movement and rough ground and regulates damping in real time and continuously, creating yet another hybrid system that provides a balanced compromise between a “soft” setup to take up vibration and a “stiffer” setup to prevent the cab from hitting the travel stops. This way, you are exposed to 15% less vibration while driving your tractor, which greatly improves your comfort.
  • Shifting gears is even easier thanks to the introduction of the semi-automatic transmission that features a joystick in place of a conventional mechanical lever (drive by wire). The joystick sends its inputs to the electronic control unit (ECU) that operates the actuators that move the transmission control. In addition to fully automated shifting, this solution offers the added benefit of lower noise and pollutant emissions.

Rex4 Electra – Evolving Hybrid gives yet more evidence of how passionately Landini continues to work on renewing agricultural mechanisation, and remains an undisputed leader in the sector worldwide.
